Microsoft Edge. Dok. Microsoft Official |
Microsoft Edge is a cross-platform web browser developed by Microsoft, created as the successor to Internet Explorer (IE).
It was first released in 2015 as part of Windows 10 and Xbox One and was later ported to other platforms as a fork of Google’s Chromium open-source project: Android and iOS, macOS, older Windows versions (Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2 and later), and most recently Linux.
Edge has various features, including the ability to use Microsoft Edge settings to add language support, take notes, write, doodle, and highlight directly on webpages, run JavaScript in the console, and use Microsoft Translator to translate pages written in different languages.
Additionally, Microsoft Edge has a kiosk mode for public use in retail stores or other public venues where users only need access to specific web pages.

In late 2018, it was announced that Edge would be completely rebuilt as a Chromium-based browser with Blink and V8 engines.
The new Edge was publicly released in January 2020, and on Xbox platforms in 2021.
Microsoft has since terminated security support for the original browser (now referred to as Microsoft Edge Legacy), and in Windows 11, it is the default web browser (for compatibility with Google Chrome).

Microsoft Edge has gained popularity, and in May 2022, according to StatCounter, it became the second most popular browser in the world, overtaking Apple’s Safari in many countries and used by 11 percent of PCs worldwide.
Additionally, early benchmarks of the EdgeHTML engine had drastically better JavaScript performance than Internet Explorer 11, similar to Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox.
Microsoft has also proved superior power efficiency of Edge in comparison to all other major web browsers.
However, Edge originally lacked support for open media standards such as WebM and Opus, but these were later added in Edge 14.
Microsoft Edge Legacy’s release cadence was tied to the Windows 10 release cycle and used the Windows Insider Program to preview new browser versions.
In December 2014, technology writer Mary Jo Foley reported that Microsoft was developing a new web browser codenamed “Spartan” for Windows 10.
